Which ends? I can't tell from the pics...

Possibly part of a treadle sewing machine stand.

Looks cast, looks like it was more decorative than structural. Grate cover maybe.

Callisto, welcome to TNet:hello: Fellow TNetters above have suggested some good potential IDs. What else, if anything, did you find in the area? Research your property. Was it once a farm or was a former school house there? Answering these questions can help bring context to your artifact. Good luck!

Thank you so much for the great info. I searched forever and found nothing as convincing as these suggestions! I teach American history so this forum and hobby is a godsend. Thanks again to everyone!

I found a ton of stuff over a couple of days. I’m going to do more this weekend. A number of hand wrought nails and some objects I can’t ID like a bracelet shaped ring of iron, a thin headless spike (?), a large one piece cooking pan maybe pewter or tin with hand-done notching on the handle - very corroded but very cool.

Since you're a history teacher, you might consider having students ID one of the artifacts for extra credit. It would be interesting to see what answers your students come up with and why. Have them explain to you & their classmates the when/how the artifact was used.

Just another thought, Seems this was found in your back yard, there’s a real good chance this could be a piece of a cast iron bench also.
