Hello folks! Just thought I'd post this here for opinions. In the "Today's Finds" forum it's been suggested that this is possibly a canteen cap. It has patent dates showing but I have no clue how to look it up because I don't know what to call this thing.

Here's the same pics I posted there. If another angle would help, just let me know.

As far as I can tell, it says, "PAT. NOV 24 1857 EXTENDED NOV 24 1875"

The small circle at the bottom is still attached by a sliver of the threads.

Due to the extremely fine-grain threading, I think it is the filler screw-cap for the oil lamp patented on November 24, 1857 -- US Patent #18,704. Check the original patent-diagram for the screw-cap marked part D. http://www.pat2pdf.org/patents/pat18704.pdf
