Capped Bust Silver!!!!

Detected a spot today and I got a zinc penny signal at 3 inches and it turned out to be a Capped bust 1/2 with a Double Die!!!!!! The 8 also looks like its been repaired. I also found a few barbers And some other coins on the 2 previous hunts. Thanks for looking HH.

Some detectors give a specific tone or signature for a zinc penny. It is much different than one for a copper penny.

It is certainly a dodgy date, something going on there that equals rarity = $ good on ya! I hope some Numismatist can fill us in. Is it double struck? How did they stamp them? Kinda looks like the 3 was left out first strike, then struck again with the 3 added, but I know nothing.

It's always hard to tell from a photographe for sure, however this would not be a double die. It is a 'repunched' or 'restrike' date. This most often happened in early coinage when as they hand punched the date in the die its self and not double striking the the die creating a doubling effect. They would also sometimes 'punch' or touch up other areas of the dies also. Dies were hard and expensive to make so they tried to get as much use from them as possible. Most times it does not increase the value like a modern double die errors does. I could not find any listing with repunched date being more valuable, but it could be.

There are 8 known/listed varities of this date. Most are a combination of size of date and 5C on the back.

You are correct, I should have known by looking at the 8. Turns out its a very common variety 1835 LM-10 R-1
