Hi there! This is my first ever post. I am finding lots of interesting things here in Costa Rica. This morning I was walking my pups on a nature trail after a heavy morning rain and came across a tree down. I scanned the area and found this bullet on the ground. I did a search and found the stamp to be by Union Metallic Catridge Company.

I?d love if someone could help me date it, and perhaps she?d some light as to why it could be here in guanacaste.

1862 to 1982. Remington Arms used the "U" for their rimfire ammunition after it absorbed Union Metallic Cartridge Company. Yours appears to be a "dud" as it is intact but has a primer strike. Up until 1911 the cases were copper and after brass. Yours appears to be brass.

Second Charlie P. 22 rimfires are very common and usually acceptable in many places that are otherwise hostile to citizens owning guns.Maybe a guy trying to shoot something for supper and got a bad cartridge.

Lots of interesting dinner options out here haha. I’m guessing it wouldn’t have been shot recently. My first thought was perhaps I shouldn’t be walking my dogs down that secluded nature trail..

Do you ever get over toward Jaco or Herradura ? My fiancé lives there and I fly in to SJO every month more or less..
I've been looking for someone interested in hunting around Costa Rica with me.

I'm Gringo, but I speak fluent Spanish...

In order to obtain a gun license in Costa Rica you must obtain permanent residency or citizenship. You will also need a clean criminal record and a psychological exam. Once you meet the requirements you are allowed to obtain a range of firearms, up to three handguns, three rifles (for sport, as hunting is illegal for nature conservation), and semi-automatic weapons with calibers between 5.6 to 18.5 millimeters. Guns may be bought at a local licensed gun shop or from a private individual.

To import your guns, you have to submit an application with the Ministry of Public Security and declare the weapons once they arrive in customs which will hold the guns until you do the registration process.

In some South American countries it is illegal to possess guns or ammunition and enforced with “draconian measures “. To be on the safe side I would just pitch it and pretend it was never found.
