Looks almost like the decided to use it as a bone awl sharpener instead. But I have never found a pipe before. Interesting find

The carved straight line would have been the back of the pipe. The line would designate where to carve in deeper in order to make a thin "shelve". The shelve would have been drilled with a hole so the owner could tie the pipe to himself or to his medicine bag.
