The celebration, called “Sparks Around the Campfire, The Story of Schuylkill County in the Civil War,” will be held in Pottsville from Sept. 3 to Sept. 6, said Amy S. Burkhart, executive director of Pottsville Area Development Corp.
Instead of continuing the annual Molly Maguire Weekend that began in 1996, local historical and arts organizations decided instead to celebrate Schuylkill County’s Civil War history this year.
It will include re-enactments, a cemetery tour and the local premiere of a documentary honoring a local Civil War color bearer.
The four-day event kicks off with a “Patriotic Rally” with actors and musicians at 7 p.m. Sept. 3 at Sovereign Majestic Theater, 209 N. Centre St.
“It’s going to be a re-enactment of a typical 1861, early war rally, when patriotism was at its peak,” Richards said.
Admission is 5 cents.
“It’s an authentic Civil War admission price,” Burkhart said.
A “Civil War Show and Tell” will be held 5:30 p.m. Sept. 4 at the Historical Society of Schuylkill County, 305 N. Centre St.
People can bring their Civil War artifacts for appraisal and to discuss them with other war aficionados, Burkhart said.
