I pulled this out of a honey hole a few days ago. It's a very artifact-rich area, and I have little doubt this was part of a man-made object...but I cannot fathom what that object was. Here’s a theory- It’s possibly a hematite crayon.
 

I don’t know what it is but looks more historic than pre-contact to me. Any signs of post contact occupation at your site?
