What are chains normally made from. Found 2 yesterday. Neither are magnetic but sure look like steel. Any ideas? ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1486568070.940522.webp

They look black... silver turns black in water. any numbers? try to scratch/cut with a knife if it is soft and shiny not yellow or red hue it is a good chance it is silver.. Only your test kit knows for sure!!!

Generally chains that are made of either gold or silver are stamped....mostly on the clasp area....check them out with a loupe.

I found a very tarnished silver chain! They sell silver cleaner at Walmart!

Great finds. Chains are real hard to find. In the last 4-5 yrs I have found 4000+ coins, 15+ gold rings, 50+ silver rings...and only one gold chain. I think chains are more rare than Hen's teeth! So to find 2 chains in one day...wow.

Very likely silver.

Sprinkle salt, wrap them in aluminum foil and place them in a cup of very hot water. If you smell sulfur...it's silver. After an hour or so take them out and rinse off with soapy water...rub with your fingers and a lot of black will come off. Then with the chains wet..rub them with baking soda and they should begin to shine!

Rare by behind. Our beaches are loaded with gold chains, so many that they would look like spaghetti everywhere you look if you could see them. Problem is, our detectors can't pick them up. Unless really fat or with a charm/pendent attached, you ain't gonna find them. I found 26 gold charms/pendants last season. All the chains they belonged to are still out there.

Yeah I found a gold chain and I think it was because it had a pendant!
