Anybody happen to know what the MD rules are for parks in that county (excluding state parks)? I have to attend a training for work there on the 12th and 13th of this month. I'm going to have some time to kill on Tuesday afternoon/evening and am planning on bringing my detector but I can't find any rules (about anything at all) for parks in Charleston. I might just end up door knocking, but if all else fails I'd like to at least hit some parks.

Edit: I would post this in the West Virginia Locations sub-forum but it looks like it only gets visited once every couple of months, so....

Thanks!

I don't know about Charleston but just north in Jackson county, there are no restrictions on public parks as far as I know.
If you don't mind driving 35 miles north, there is a great spot to detect. It is called Cedar Lakes, take the Fairplain exit 5 miles before Ripley.
I detect here often. the only restriction they have is that you cannot dig deeper than 6" due to underground communication cables.
Here is a link:

That might be worth it - training gets done at 3:30 on that first day so I wouldn't have a ton of daylight left, but if there's anything old coming out of there I'd be willing to take a look. Is it mostly a clad park or is there much potential for old stuff?

You will have one hour less of daylight on the 12th and 13th, you have to turn your clock back Nov. 6th. So by this time you will be getting off work at 4:30 instead of 3:30. Just something else to consider. I would find out about the local parks in Charleston. You will find more if you have more time. Good Luck

.... I can't find any rules (about anything at all) for parks in Charleston. ....

Examining that statement: Did you find any rules AT ALL ? Ie.: rules about closed at sunset, dogs on leash, no fireworks, etc.. ? Are you saying that, yes you found the "list of rules", but it failed to say anything about md'ing ?

Please clarify.

If you meant that you found rules governing use of the park, yet it was silent on the subject of md'ing, (ie.: not dis-allowed), then isn't that sufficient that it's not dis-allowed ? Or were you wanting/hoping to find an express allowance saying "metal detecting allowed here" ?

Or perhaps you found a list of rules, but are worried it's not comprehensive enough, and worry that a more-detailed list might exist elsewhere that prohibits it ?

Please clarify.

a 2 minute look through the city of charleston website, leads to their muni codes:

https://www.municode.com/library/wv/charleston/codes/code_of_ordinances

And as you can see, they have much "park rules" there. And even a key word search where you can type in variations of "metal" or "detector", etc... to see if there's anything addressing md'ing.

And if you were referring to county parks, I'm guessing you can sleuth out the same type thing.

Wasn't even aware that site there existed - it'll be a good resource. Thanks!

I sent emails out to Charleston Parks and Recreation, as well as Kanawha County Parks
PM me your email address and I will get their replies to you.
You can also check with municipalities, (towns and villages ), that are close to Charleston, if they have their own parks.
