Anyone have knowledge of the meaning of the markings? The stone with the hole is around 3’ across and several hundred pounds. I couldn’t make out any horns or antlers on the animal carving, front looks like a bear, which were everywhere, back looks like the hind quarter of a deer or elk? Domestic livestock?
Cold Case FileExploring Smoky Mountain NP. Had been to the location before but they were either underwater or covered with scum, this time a scrub brush and bucket of water and better camera. I found the location of the trail markers on a hand drawn map mid 1800s. Thanks so much for the reply. Funny, we were just talking about this post yesterday on the ride home to Orlando from the Smoky Mountains where the glyphs are located, except right now they are 20’ under the water of Fontana Lake. Found several ruins of homesteads from the late 1700 to early 1800s while hiking the trails. Not sure about the the others, but doesn't tree like carving (left upper right look kind the same?)
I think it might be the symbols for a mine? Interesting pictures.
Thanks for the info, will definitely check out the book. I think I wil take your advice and check out some local colleges for info.Correction book is titled Handbook of Treasure Signs and Symbols Published in 1980
Ordered the book a couple days ago, also emailed the Archeology Dept. @ Seminole State, no response yet. Might take an in person visit, only 1-2 miles away.Correction book is titled Handbook of Treasure Signs and Symbols Published in 1980

When we we hiking the trails, the ones that follow streams we noticed the stones in the creeks have holes worn in them from the water. Now I’m thinking the large hole in the middle of the large rock with the carvings, the “hole” in the middle was done by water not carved. For some reason who ever found the rock must here thought it was special or something and carved the symbols around the hole.

A true chicken ladder doesn't have rungs, it has notches cut into a straight tree section. Rather than messing with rungs, which require more work and, importantly, secure fasteners, these are much easier to make, more secure and longer lasting. Here's an old Spanish one discovered in the early 20th century at Santa Rita del Cobre in New Mexico in an old sealed adit, along with leather ore bags. There is a book by Mary Carson called Treasure Signs and Symbols. That is where we saw it. It is sometimes called " chicken ladder of a pole ladder and was used by the Mexicans , Spanish not sure about the Jesuits. The number of Veras/rungs would indicate how far down to go in a mine .
