My brother has been in Chicago on business all week. He said he was in several banks where he added his halves to the counter and filled the bank but they told him they were not allowed to sell them. He was so upset as he saw lots of silver in the bags.

And you can thank some idiot newbie for that most likely. They were changing the bag at my dump bank last year and I spied silver and bought the bag. I pulled 57 40%, 4 64's and 1 Walker. The next week I was told they wouldn't sell the bags anymore. Seems like someone bought the bag, then came back an hour later and dumped it back on them. It's idiots like that that are ruining this hobby causing new bank rules and fee's.

I just ordered 2 boxes from my bank this morning. As I was leaving I decided to ask the head teller if I could buy the bag of halves from the counting machine. She said sure, & took my name & phone # and said it only fills up every few months. I said that was o.k., just call me & I'll come in. That was clue # one that no one is using this as a dump bank. Clue # 2 was she told me if you buy halves there & come to re dump them, they charge a 10 % fee for re-rolling !. Maybe just maybe that bag will have some good ones in it !!. Ron

What are you waiting for find out how many halves you need to fill the bag and go fill it and take it home before someone shows up on her day off and off it goes.

Good advice.

It is great advice Cat, but they told me they have to hand roll them when the bag is full. I figured if they saw me dumping to fill the bag then they wouldnt sell them to me. If they would just give me the bag, that would have been a done deal. Thanks, Ron

Then just call them and ask if you can buy the bag tell them you don't need for them to roll them for you that you would prefer to have them loose and you would be happy to roll them when you are done. If they say ok then ask how much is needed to finish off the bag and then show up with that much and a little more just in case.

Some banks require everything to be rolled before being sold, they don't trust their coin counters....usually they claim accuracy is their reason.

What does that say about the accuracy of what they count for you? Probably not exactly reliable. The count is notoriously more wrong when the bag sits there longer as those bags collect more similar sized junk. This is why the half dollar bags have more junk in them. I would guess dollar coin bags have a similar problem but I haven't ever tried one of those. With all other denominations the junk is there as well it is just spread out over many more bags.

I have had a few counters be off a coin or two or count a dime as a penny (or vice versa). Only twice have I had it be far enough off that I had to complain. Once it was off $10 worth of nickels (they recounted and determined that I was right). Second time (same bank oddly enough) was off $2 in halves which usually I wouldn't notice except that I knew exactly how many I had that day. They were having trouble doing something in the back so they just gave me my $2 and I left before they clarified the amount.

Sometimes I have had tellers just run the bag through the machine again to verify the count as well (you could suggest this as opposed to rolling and see what they say as well).
