I managed to squeeze a couple hour hunt in yesterday at a field that I was dying to try the past couple weeks. The field is about 75 acres so I decided to just start by working the edges. I'm excited to see what this place has to hold because I managed to get a couple of really nice early finds from the little area that I covered. The finds for the day consisted of: The purty 1805 half cent, the inside of a shoe buckle and pieces of its frame, 2 flat buttons, 2 CHRISTMAS crotal bells, a baby skeleton key, and a crude little musket ball. I was fighting freezing/thawing ground and a lot of hot rocks but I'm psyched about this new place!!! :happysmiley:

Sweet ha'penny! Is that a farmer's field? Or natural terrain? Looks like a place that will occupy your time for years to come!

Thanks! Yea, its a corn field completely surrounded by woods. There was a 1700s iron furnace located really close by and there might have been a house or 2 in the field. CC

Congrats! Nice detail on the half cent. Looks like you got a sweet spot! HH!

Sweet coin. Find someone who knows how to clean it for you without damaging.

Very nice finds! Great looking LC.

That place looks like you may hit the mother lode. Fantastic recoveries on your first hunt. Can't wait to see what else you dig.

Yeah, took the words right out of my mouth, and they are in great shape to boot, must not of been in all that fertilizer like the ones Iv'e been finding lately.

Great finds, those bells are cool too.

WTG on the finds! Love the bells when there all in 1 pc & still ring! Still waiting for my 1st 1/2 of anything.

In 1805 only 814,464 half cents were minted. There are 3 varieties priced in the Red Book (small "5" with stems being the rarest).

I'm gonna call yours a medium "5", stemless, gonna say Fine-12 or less (shoulder drapery and brow hair worn smooth) Red Books at $90 - $120.

Ungraded, they sell for about ~$50 on eBay. Graded Fine, it sells for about $80 on eBay.

Nice find! Anything Draped Bust is a nice find.

P.S. A field that big, it might be worth it to keep a running log of where you find stuff. Screenshot the field in Google Maps and use Paint to draw grid blocks, then number the blocks. It'll help you identify the best places to hunt and may even provide insight on buildings that were once there long ago.

Thanks for the helpful information and advice! I think I will indeed print out a google maps image and record where exactly the finds are coming from. That will help me pinpoint the sweet spots.
Thanks again for the info!

I'd be excited to if I had finds like that coming out from the edges!! Looking forward to more great finds!! Love that bust!
