Cienega Benders

Curious if anyone has any information on this story? I am in Tucson and have been doing a little research into this story, but details are hard to come by. I first read about it in Dig Here!, and found very little else other then a news paper story from 1897. I have hiked the area tons of times, but usually lose interest in the story and get drawn into the amazing scenery in Cienega Creek area.
