Hi everyone,

Got to hunt a little today after work and found a live 12 pound Bormann fuse Civil War cannonball. You can imagine the tone my detector set off on this bad boy. :o :o This one will be going out tomorrow to be decommissioned. I have a friend that has the equipment to inert them. they do so by drilling a hole in the side and flushing out all the powder. By next Friday I should have all my shells back and will photograph and post them for TN. Thanks for looking.

Well Dang.........what a find!!! Ahhh, not sure I would want to find one of those, with my kind of luck...it would blow up!!! LOL

Question: How do you know it's still loaded? I'm not an ammo expert, (I just know that you treat any weapon like it's loaded), just incase I dig up one........one of these days!

It's not in pieces. Literally.

Shell's expode and throw shrapnel all over like a hand grenade. They were used as anti personnel weapons. Shrapnel consists of remains of fuse, pieces of the shell and generally .69 caliber round balls that filled the shell.

Shot's are solid balls and were good for knocking down buildings, walls, etc.

This is a shell. The round light colored (zinc) is a time fuse. It is punched, so that flames from the firing will ignite the small amount of powder in the fuse and then it ignites the powder in the shell and it explodes.

BOOM !

Hope that helps.

Well the bad boy is away to be decommissiond. I should have them all back by next Friday. Ill be sure to post and also show how they were disarmed. Here is a photo of the others I have not recieved back yet. The open shell is a display of what actually is inside the Bormann.

How'ja get those puppies so clean?

Hey TC,

I used a couple different methods. Lye and Zinc to loosen and a dremmel to finish. Takes a bit of time but well worth it. ;D

Yes, they sprout up with time and love :-* ;)
