Got permission to hunt a site today that was used as General Hunters temporary headquarters in 1864 in the Shenandoah Valley. The place had been hunted by other diggers over the years, but I was hoping to find a few overlooked relics. While hunting an area that was loaded with iron, I got a weak signal and out pops this six pointed star with two small holes in it. I also found a few mini balls and camp lead. After getting home I researched it and found a very similar one that had been sold by the Union Drummer Boy in Gettysburg. The 8th Corp never entered the Shenandoah Valley but the Army of West Virginia did and they were with General Hunters. They called themselves the Army of the Shenandoah and they adopted the 6 pointed star as their Corp badge. The first picture is of my badge (made to be sewn on a cap or jacket) and the other pictures are from the Drummer Boy.
