Civil War Brass? Part of a Gag Swivel?

**UPDATE - I believe its part of a gag swivel for a horse harness, per what I saw on another forum.

I did some volunteer "archeology" on a historic site today, with permission of course. All finds were given to the museum. This site saw intense Civil War activity. This brass piece looks period and somewhat familiar - any ideas? Thanks!

Also found a nice 1929 Buffalo Nickel.

The one I found was ID as a sword hanger. I'll look a link to see if I'm not just blowing smoke. Very nice find either way.

Thanks pepperj - I wish you were right about the sword hanger, but don't think so . . .

Nice find anyway Richard. I bet it sounded GOOD. HH, Q.

I saw the same post you were talking about in identifying it as horse tack swivel. I believe Steve in Pa ID'ed it as that? Yours isn't mangled like the other was but certainly looks like the same. Nice old nickel too!

Steve may have, but I think Creskol was who I saw ID it. I've seen comments that these were not military issue, but civilian pieces. I know they were around after the Civil War, but I'm still curious how far back they date. There was heavy CW activity on the site I found this.
