Had a great time out digging this past few days with good friends at the annual DIV. I managed to dig 40 or so bullets (ranging from dropped 3-ringers, sharps, spencer, various pistol rounds, fired and melted bullets).
I also managed to find 10 buttons that held together, including 4 eagle I's and 1 US staff cuff (rest are general service). A number of button backs and others that fell apart.
My best find of the trip was the enfield trigger guard and the candle holder (hopefully it is dated at the top).
I dug two neat carved bullets, 1 was wormed and then had the top cut off and the other was the ring at the bottom (wonder if they are from the same bullet as they were found together). My favorite lead find is the nipple protector made from a bullet.
The brass was heavier for me than the lead as we waited until too late to get into the bullet fields, but there were still some available.
All in all it was a tough hunt but stuff was certainly there, I saw some great finds made from those in our group and others from folks I saw at lunch.
HH
Dan

Great historical recovery!! Buttons and bullets are unbelievable! Congrats, keep it coming! HH

Looks like you had a great time! Always love buttons - and I agree, the nipple protector is great stuff.

Great Job Dan! Love seeing these DIV posts roll in. Looks like you got a lot of really solid buttons with some awesome green patina on them. That nipple protector is really cool... really want to dig one of those one day. The trigger guard and all the rest of the lead, also awesome.

Is that a piece of a shoe buckle frame I see in your hand full of assorted brass? If so, there must have been a old house site close by. I've dug similar shoe frame designs.

That's a bunch of targets Dan, and I'm surprised that a number of your buttons survived intact. Cool trigger guard too. I found one up there a few years ago that may be the same as yours, so I'll have to go dig it out.

I agree with Bill, the buttons look great! That's a mess of neat historical finds. I don't find much around here from the Civil War, so I'm envious, of course. Very nice hunt! Congrats..

Great finds Dan, you did good on the brass compared to most. The Enfield trigger guard is an awesome save! Nice to meet you as well.

Way to go, Dan! I see your machine was hot on brass!!!

Nice job Dan. I like the nipple protector also. I also like the flattened fired bullets. Maybe the candle holder will clean up some? Good selection of finds.

Wow Dan,

That's a crazy number of relics- love the trigger guard and buttons. Post a few pics after you clean up the buttons. Nice work

Sadly enough, those are about as clean as those buttons will get...that soil treats them horribly.
