Hello All!

Kindafoundabuckle and I went out to our campsite a few days ago. It was cold as hell and hard digging, but we were experiencing some serious detectin' withdrawal! So we got out there and dug a few pieces, including an interesting whatzit that I may post in the "What is it" thread. So here they are. As was the usual fare for this site, which may have been a picket post on the outside of a small camp, we found round balls and .69 cal. minieballs. After an hour or two we decided is was too darn cold and did some legwork on a few other spots we had in mind in the area. Enjoy!

First off, the brass "whatzit." If anyone has any idea about this one, please feel free to let me know. It is about 2.5 inches long, hollow on the inside, and it has a slightly flared end.

A .69 caliber bullet that had the rings carved off. I have found one other bullet with the rings carved off before. Seems like an odd practice. Anyone else found one? This one was evidently loaded into the gun either before or after it was carved and then pulled out again.

And a photo of our little bunch of relics. Too bad it was such a short hunt...

Just an idea but could the brass thing be a knife handle.???? Just guessing by looking at the end of it.

I was thinking a handle the went on the end of a mess kit skillet used for cooking.

I got through my withdrawl today too... great finds!

Love seeing the bullets ,and, was that a button lower left last pic?

The object in the lower left of the last pic is a charred round ball. We've found probably six of them in this site already. Looks like they were dropped in coals that were hot enough to scorch them but not burn them.

Yeah could be.

Thank you all for your comments! I'm not entirely convinced about the knife handle idea. I would have thought that the non-"business" end of a knive would've been at least somewhat rounded.

But its broken at that end, also could have been plugged.

Well now that does make sense! Were you all talking about a weapon knife or an eating utensil? I've only dug iron utensils out of campsites in the past...

Eating utensil I guess.
