I know this is a very old post,but in case you,re still around,get the book "Steamboats and ferries on the White River" It has a very good chapter on Civil War doings along the White River.

The White River was one of the most traveled routes in Arkansas during the 1800s and is full of history in itself. Pick up the book Wild Sports In The Far West by Frederick Gerstaecker for a great read along those lines. The Arkansas Historical Society and Argen.net have really good history on the CW as well.
