Civil War era Whatsit

I found these two items in different locations around where I live. Both were found in areas of civil war activity. These two items are the same thing but look very different. What the heck are they?

Looks to me like shear pins use to hook up farm equipment

They do kinda-sorta, but they are pieces to a set of antique porcelain door knobs.
