Got back out this evening for a quick hunt before dark. I went to an area that I recently dug what was thought to be the female half to a snake buckle in hopes that I could recover the other half. I dug a metal horse figure on my first hole. My second hole of the night I dug an Eagle Breast Plate, this is my very first confirmed CW find so as you can imagine I was pretty pumped up. I need to do some reading on how to properly clean it up. I also dug a flat button and what appears to be an old water spout. Thanks for looking!

Nice Eagle Breast Plate TroutGuide. I would PM TheCannonballGuy for some help in zero'ng on its age. Here is an example of his help...

Your find is a Regulation 1826 US Army Enlisted-man's shoulder-belt plate (commonly known as an "eagle breastplate"). Because yours had three iron-wire hooks which are embedded in a lead-solder backfilling, it was manufactured sometime between 1831 and the 1850s. Being made long before the war began, and thus in much smaller quantity than the wartime version with two iron wire loops, your version is much more rare. For additional info (and photos of several varieties) see pages 274-285 in the book "American Military Belt Plates."

Hi, great finds:icon_thumleft:

Nice finds troutguide. Congrats on your first CW.

OK why do some eagle breast plates have lead on the back and some don't. I dug my first Breast plate earlier this year but mine had lead on the back side

Very nice relics. That is a nice Breast Plate.

Congrats, I love the horse.

Congrats on your first breastplate! That one still eludes me. Your water spout is from an old teapot or kettle. Nice finds!
