Does anyone have any idea, as to the value of this sword?


ORIGINAL CIVIL WAR UNION ARMY OFFICERS OLD REGULATION DRESS SABRE. 32 INCH ETCHED BLADE TO BOTH SIDES STAMPED " HORSTMANN & SONS PHILADELPHIA " AT RICASSO. GILT BRASS HILT, SNAKESKIN WIRE WRAPPED HANDLE. .CONTAINED IN ORIGINAL STEEL SCABBARD TO FIT WITH GILT BRASS DOUBLE HANGER RINGS. DRAG HAS BEEN PERIOD FILED DOWN.

I am not very knowledgeable on Civil War Swords and due to the Sword's condition, you could be correct! However, the wrapping on it, is very similar to the wrapping on the genuine Civil War Sword at the link below.

Shark skin was the favored grip covering during the CW era. It gives a very non-slip grip. The one in Frank's supplied link shows a shark skin handle.

Shagreen, or sharkskin makes sense; Could they be mistaken and thought it was snakeskin?
