Hey T-Netters !
You all sure know how to put the pressure on someone by watching everyone find all the good stuff. So today I tried a new spot for about 2 hours. It is iron infested and the first thing I hit was a modern clad pocket spill in about a 3 foot area. I had to dig it even though it was modern it drove me crazy and dirt was flying till I got it all. :laughing7: I was skipping iron and seeing if I could get some lead just to see if it was a site. Well I dug a couple of fired weird looking bullets about half the size on an enfield and one round ball and some melted camp lead.. The hits slowed down so started seeing what the iron was a got a canister shots and a horse shoe. Then remnants of a pocket knife. My best find was I believe to be the sight off of an enfield rifle. Possibly an 1853 British Enfiled ladder style used by the confederacy? I am kicking myself for skipping the iron as I know better than that but I think the coin spill had me tore up!!
Anyone have any thoughts on this rifle sight?
Hope everyone had a good Saturday. Thanks for looking.

Congrats on your relics! Idk about the E field rifle sight kinda looks like it maybe, guessing. Don't beat your self up on passing over the iron signals we have all done it, been distracted by something else. At lest you "did" check out the iron.

You the man Richard. I have always wanted to find a complete sight. WTG, Q.

Post Civil War Trapdoor Springfield maybe ? 1870s. Compare the shape of the base, especially the "ears" towards the front.

Great call Bandit They are called Bennington sights for 1873

Concerning the dug rifle musket (RM) sight, it is not a trapdoor sight. Its a M1853 Enfield RM rear sight. I base that comment on a comparison the the Enfield mounted on the wall next to me (sorry I have not learned to add pics to my text yet), as well as a quick review of a couple of Civil War reference books on my shelf (eg. "Firearms from Europe", and "Firearms from Abroad"). I might add that I also have a Model 1873 Trapdoor Springfield in collection. Though the 2 sights are very similar, the Enfield has the distinctive "steps" on the sides of the sight, not present on the trapdoor sight. Also, the end of the ladder portion of the sight is clearly an Enfield. The trapdoor does not have that "V" notch so configured. Exactly the type of RM sight that I would expect to see dug on the Tn-Ga, state line. "TNmoutains", where'd you say that you dug that sight? ...nice finds.

Thanks Q. I am getting a pile of canister shot this year.

Thank you sir for confirming .Chattanooga and it actually was dug near the Tn-Ga line. I know the battle date and time, who and where. I knew it was civil war just unsure if it was the ladder style which was contracted by the Confederates from the British with what little time I had to research the find.
Question. How hard is it for that RM to be removed? Reason I ask is I skipped over some iron signals and think it warrants more time.

Not bad for a first two hours on a site.
If not for iron I'd have been skunked today.

After looking at my own 1853 Enfield (a Tower marked 1857) I have to agree. I also used to have a "Trapdoor" and that was what came to mind first. The exact shape of the elevation "ramps" would tell for sure but I'm afraid trying any electrolosis or anything of that nature will only disolve it more and considering where it was found I'm going to agree it's Enfield. Awsome finds.

That's a lot of digging! Still in all some great finds!

Agreed that it is not trapdoor. My sis has that Enfield, and it has those graduated ramps. Go back and get the rest of that gun, son!

Looks like you found the right spot... Nice looking relics!

Awesome Richard. Congrats on that rifle sight. Sure beats clad.
