Possibly half a latch. Fits through a slot and turns to keep what ever it's on closed.

I'm with you on that, Bosn. But, any idea what it came off of? Satchel, knapsack, etc.?.....

It is the turn-latch from an epaulette (shoulder-scales). You'll have to look close to see it in the photo below, but it's there. I'll also include a closeup of the slot it fit through. The Confederates do not seem to have manufactured this version of epaulettes, so your turn-latch is a yankee relic.

I'm thinking half a turn latch, but this is about as good a picture of a picture of one that I could find.

Cannonball guy nailed it while I was looking for a picture. I learnd something today also. Had no idea the epulates had a turn latch on them.
