I found this medallion this evening while out detecting. It was about 6" deep and hit like a silver quarter. On the front bottom it reads, 1861 VETERAN 1866, On the top half it reads. GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC. On each point of the stars there are symbols. they are an Anchor, Crossed Swords, Crossed Cannons, Crossed Guns, and a Bugle. On the back there are many symbols, a Shield with stripes in the middle along with rings of various symbols surrounding it. I have seen nothing like this before and would appreciate any help identifying this medallion. I'm assuming it was a medal for a civial war veteran just by the dates upon it. Thanks for any help. I hope the pics. turn out decent.

Re: Cival War Veterans Metal?

You're pretty much right regarding what this was used for. It should most likely have holes in the upper two points of the star where this would hang from a ribbon, of which there were various designs. Below are a couple of variations. Although worth more with the ribbon one without (like yours) just sold on eBay for $26. (there were a lot of these made).

Re: Cival War Veterans Metal?

Thank you very much. I'm thrilled to see what the whole medal looked like. Myself and a friend were hunting the May Moore Masion this evening when I found this, I didn't find this at the mansion itself but at a house at the bottom of the hill which had burned down. He had found a Buffalo nickel at the mansion (date unreadable) and wanted to trade for it. LOL! We will be going back soon. the ground was very damp and I think we were recieving alot of mixed signals due to the moisture.
Being this is a Cival War Medal it is my oldest and neatest find to date. I would just love to trace down who it was awarded too. But that would be near impossible. Thanks again for the fine info and pics of your medals NHbenz. Good Hunting all! Gator

I would almost bet the top half of this medal is in the immediate vicinity. I will try and locate it also. This is an awesome site with people loaded with a wealth of information. Just glad to be a part of the community.
