I found this clasp style brass buckle at an old house site that was occupied from 1840-1950. Just curious, but can anyone tell me when they started making these clasp buckles? I'm trying to put a date with this. Thanks for any assistance!

Just got a private message from a digger saying it reminded him of a tourniquet style buckle.....Never thought of that. Any possibility??? Were the "teeth" on this buckle meant to grip cloth and not leather?

It's possible. A few years ago my dad found a iron buckle we classified as a horse buckle and I found out it was a field tourniquet.
