90% of tombacs never need cleaning, some almost come up silver. If you have one with build up or one in a fire, cleaning maybe hard. Your method will do it no harm.

Very tough. It seems anything strong enough to clean is too harsh on the metal.

Some metals react very badly in the soil, while others often remain untouched. :icon_scratch:
Most of the 'Tombac Buttons' I've been luck enough to find have all come out of the soil very clean, as Cru mentioned, they often look like silver after a light wash.

My advice is... leave it be,
