Cleaning artifacts

I really need some suggestions on how to clean my artifacts. I can't get them clean enough with just a toothbrush and everytime I put them in water I mess up the patina. Help, Please. I really want to clean my artifacts and tools but I don't want to ruin them. Thanks for any and all advice
