You're a lucky person.

Cleaning depends upon the piece in question and the extent of the damage.

Mostly iron guns are the most difficult because thin iron tends to turn to dust.

Mostly brass guns are much easier.

As a rule, leave it as dug. You can soak it in water for a time and then dry it with heat to remove loose mud.

But go easy.
