If I would have dug this buckle in VA I would have flipped. I pulled it out of the hole upside down.I knew their is no bleeping way it would be csa.But the shape sure got my attention.Still a cool buckle. I assume it is just a civilian dress buckle of some sort as it is not heavy duty. Also got another dateless standing liberty quarter on my way to china.Bugger was nice and deep. And lastly another silver rosey and 1910 wheat cent.Again this was a old spot I was going over again with new loop.

Thank you for sharing your hunt and those pictures

Wow. Great finds. The buckle piece and the SLQ are great. 4 For the year?... Can you leave some for the rest of us? :laughing7:

Nice standing! I have not gotten a standing, just a Washington and Barber quarter spread!

The others are ok. Actually they're pretty nice too...

Cheers

Yes but the date of 1860 is probably correct.

Great finds, way to go!

No doubt authentic.
This buckle was worn on a light woven cloth belt, and yes they do seem extremely lightweight.
To learn more about this type of buckle take a look at old posts on this site by Kuger or CCHunter they ave written extensively on the topic. These buckles were out of fashion by 1860, and can commonly be seen in dag and ambrotype photos of gold miners. Just google California gold rush buckles and you will find a vast array of styles. Mostly eagles, but rarely others like anchors, miners, etc.

Looks like a really nice site with the pates and buckles. Great gold rush history. Now you just need that lost sack of nuggets. Good luck and thanks for sharing!
