:hello:

I'm not a big fan of club digs, but the one I joined a couple of years back does get some good land to search, so I pop along from time to time if I fancy the area they are going to, and Sunday gone they were.
We hit some fields that had produced saxon finds from the previous week and the days fields were next to those, so virgin ground. It didn't long to hit a good area infact just through the entrance to the field.
I was getting roman grots one after the other in a small area, and then a brooch, it was clear the ground was heavy in iron contaminant, the coins were heavily encrusted along with the brooch. About ten digs in I got a nice clear two way signal and I was staring down at a very nice Roman Silver Siliqua of HONORIUS Roman Imperial..235-476.

I'm out again tomorrow on another club dig so hopefully I will have some more goodies to show.:hello2:

Looking at the brooch after a good electrolysis (which I don't like doing on bronze) I'm not 100% sure that it is roman, maybe a Saxon disc brooch.:icon_scratch::icon_scratch: also had another artefact which I'm sure is saxon but not quite sure what it is :icon_scratch: .........................

Thats a fine Siliqua Colin! I love these 5thC. coins we rarely get here. In all these years detecting i only got a single one (with a hole punched in...) :laughing9:
Hope the brooch is Saxon. Maybe a Sceat is close. Good luck tomorrow!

Yeap, thats a nice one, you should see the state of my siliqua today!

Pretty sure that is a Roman Brooch, had a few of that type.

The mystery bit is an odd ancient piece. Glad your out & about & posting again, good luck tomorow.

Great find !
Your siliqua was minted at Mediolanum (today's Milan, Italy) during the second of three terms when that mint was operational (364-475AD).
