Fd. this in WA recently. Light for the size, and only slightly heavier than many kinds of wood of a similar size. Writes on paper, so fairly soft.

Could this be coal? Does coal have a nearly irridescent sheen?

Forgive my questions, but coal is nearly impossible to find in Oregon, and only slightly more common in WA. I don't know that I have ever personally found any before.

BTW, there was a slab about 4 feet by 2 feet nearby which had the same black sheen to it.

could be coal, chip off a piece, take it outside and try to burn it with a torch.

Does it colour your fingers greyish just by gently rubbing it?
Could be graphite then.

Thanks for the help!

Doesn't come off on my fingers or hands while handling it, but does easily write on paper, as easily as a pencil.

I will try burning a little of it in a blow-torch and see if it ignites quickly.
