Coal or Jet Stone????? Please help

I found this black rock on the beach and I am curious to know if it is Jet or coal, or anything else. When I mark it on white paper it streaks brown.

1st - I noticed this was your very first post - so, Welcome Aboard MeganL! You didn't list your state (or country) in your profile. So, you might consider jumping over to Sub-Forums: Select Your Area.... and selecting location information (i.e., clubs, hunts, finds, legends, maps, etc.) directly related to your state (or country). If you have a piece of unglazed porcelain (like the bottom of a cup or plate) jet will leave a brown streak and coal a black streak.

Don't know about paper.

I have used the underside of a toilet tank lid for porcelain streak testing...
