Coil cable using short dive shaft

Ok, I’m trying to use the short lower shaft to set my Excal up for diving. What do I do with all the excess cable? How do people wrap the coil cable for diving?

Most of the time it's a mess, 6 foot of cable wound on 15 inch rod.
