Detector(s) used
Minelab Explorer SE w/SunRay X-1, X-5 and X-8 / Whites XLT / Whites GM3
I just purchased a Minelab Explorer SE, along with that I purchased a SunRay 8" coil (on back order). I've read multiple times that the 10.5" stock coil is little unstable in trashy areas. Has anyone experienced this? I bought the 8" for a secondary coil for trashy areas, but I've been receiving advice to go with a 5" SunRay or 4.5x7" coil. Anyone have any experience with these smaller coils?

I'll primarily be coinshooting and relic hunting, but I do get into some trashy areas. I also purchased a extra upper and lower rod assembly so I can quickly swap coils on the fly. So I was thinking of keeping the 10.5 coil for deep/clean sweeping, and setting up one rod assembly with the 8" and the other with 5" or 4.5x7" coil.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

It is not that the larger coil is unstable as much as there can be mulitible targets under it at any one time. This makes it hard for the detector to locate an ID just one. This is where a small coil comes into play. With it's smaller foot print it can move around the trash easier to locate the one good target.

You can keep the different coils on different shafts for ease of changing. I usually only bring one coil with me an make do. The next time I will a different size. To me, even the 5" or 4.5x7" appear to be big as my sniper coil is 3" for the Garrett and Fisher.

Use the 8 inch coil and use the machine on fast mode. the shorter signal helps seperate targets in trashy areas. This effect would be like using a smaller coil than even the 8inch. good hunting seeya Neilo

I have used a 5" Excellorator coil with my EXP II. It is very stable and I have found coins at about 10". I have not had an area when using the standard 10.5 " coil that I could not get stable operation by reducing the sensitivity lower, (So far no lower than 14).

Thanks for the advice. I see the default for the SE is 'auto' and is in the range of 22. I think I might need to switch to manual. Have any experience with auto vs manual?

Thanks!

Howdy
On the Explorer's at least on mine it is a II when in auto sens. the screen can say 22 but if a sens. of 4 is required you will be detecting at 4 in manual if you are detecting at 22 you will be at 22 no atter what.

Hello Drygulch

Thanks for posting. So would you recommend keeping it on auto? Or just depends on the trash of the area. I'm assuming that high trash might be better in auto?

Thanks!

If the sensitivity is set to high in manual the detector will become unstable so just reduce the setting until stability returns or just run it in auto and the detector will take care of it for you. However sometimes the auto mode will make the setting ultra conservative.

Forgot to say the trash problem is a discrimination problem.
