What does the end of the shaft that's hidden by the coiled aluminum look like, photo please?

Could be a coil of solder/tin. But that would not have a threaded end.

If it weren't for the threaded end, I'd say it looks like a used can opener from like a tin of sardines or something. The kind where you have a little "key" that you twist and it peels back the metal and winds it up like that.

Or did someone jam a piece of aluminum sheet metal onto the other piece?

I went ahead and unraveled it. Any new thoughts on it? Still feels like aluminum

Tail end not broken. Cut and somewhat rounded. "Finished" end you could say

Maybe it was part of some mechanical switch that used temperature to make that coil move. They used to have stuff like that on furnaces vent pipes or something but I can't remember their name or ever seeing one like that
