PCGS officials announced they'll pay a $10,000 reward just to see an authentic 1964-D Peace dollar, a historic coin that was eagerly anticipated by collectors a half century ago but never officially released into circulation.

"Mint records indicate that 316,076 1964-dated silver Peace dollars were struck at the Denver Mint in May 1965, but they were all were supposed to be destroyed," said Don Willis , President of PCGS, a division of Collectors Universe, Inc. (NASDAQ: CLCT).
"These coins have achieved legendary status with rumors and speculation over the decades that some examples may have survived. PCGS now is offering a $10,000 cash reward just to view in person and verify a genuine 1964-D Peace dollar," Willis stated.

If you find one, DO NOT SHOW IT TO THEM! The government will probably declare them illegal to own (see 1974 Aluminum cent or 1933 Gold $20). They will take it from you. Get the coin overseas to a country that will not extradite the coin or give information to our government.

Why does PCGS really want to see the coin? Even with the coin being authenticated and graded would not add value since the coin is stolen property from the US government and cannot be legally sold.

sounds fishy to me! I would tell them to meet me in the SoCal desert, and they can only send three reps. no cops. Then I would bring two of my guys with me as well. it would be a classic show down. "show me the 10K." .."no, show us the coin first." If things went bad, a shootout would most likely ensue

You are right about this... It is illegal to own. That's why none have been reported - it would be confiscated (either that, or they actually WERE all melted and none exist). If I had one, I'd ask to remain anonymous. Then take the reward in certified Morgan dollars.
