Had Friday off and headed over to Druid Hill Park in Baltimore for a hunt. I decided on four different spots to detect. While the first produced nothing more than clad, the second held a big surprise, a copper coin, the size of which I'd never seen. It came from 9-inches down and is 4 cm in diameter; this is an 1832 80 reis from Brazil that is counter-stamped as 40. IMG_7342.webpIMG_7343.webpIMG_7346.webp

Also from location 2 came the remains of an old padlock keyhole cover with the royal cypher WR patent.

The third location gave me my first IHC of the day, an 1899.

The fourth and final spot held even more good finds: two more IHCs

and an 1860 one shilling

....a hunt I won't forget.

Thanks Jamie! One hole had a wheat and a buff, so I got my nickel for the "board".

Thanks boxxxer! You're right, these definitely fit the "unexpected" category for me.

Thanks Tom! It's been a great run of silvers from this park since late November - running total since Thanksgiving is 8.

Thanks mpmccann! Sounds like you had some awesome finds from Baltimore's parks. When were you hunting there?

Great finds your going to have a great coin collection this year now that the addiction is in full swing but its a good addiction excercise thrill of the hunt the great outdoors and you get paid to have a blast Well done

Thanks Tommy! Appreciate your recounting ALL the benefits of the addiction; I never tire of being reminded.

Hey McD, you sure covered the bases on that hunt! ALL kinds of neat stuff, including some of which I've never seen. Thx for sharing, great stuff! Ddf.

Thanks ddf! You wonder how many times you can go back to the well; seems like the well's not dry.

Really unique finds. Love those old foreign coins.

Thanks Johncoho! I was diggin' deep and flipped that copper out of the hole. The '40' on the reverse is actually a countermark, stamped over the original '80' as it was minted as an 80 reis coin in Rio de Janeiro. From examples I've seen online, the countermark can be off-center, but this one looks like it belongs.

Nice old coin shooting! :occasion14:

Thanks Professor! I do like shootin' coins. GL! & HH!

Great old coins and history. Good job.

Thanks Kona Koma! Great hunt. Here's an example of what my coin looked like when it was dropped who knows how long ago.
