Not mine! I totally wish though lol Found them on my desk when a friend of the family popped in my office today to show me his coin collection since we've been talking about it when he comes by to visit. I love old coins! He has tons of wheats, silver quarters, Indian heads, tokens issued during the depression, and some foreign coins. I was able to research the shield nickel for him and the Trinidad and Tobago coin. But curious about these....

This dime with a hole in it? Made into a charm for a necklace or bracelet? Or in some other posts I've seen counterfeit coins having holes drilled in them? He has no clue. Just found it as is years and years ago.

And this one. I was able to find that it's some type of Spanish currency. The date looks like 1313, but I'm pretty sure it's 1813. It says Ferdinand something. I read where several different Hispanic countries used this coin, but on the back side, top leftish, it says "A.G". I think it may have to do with whatever country that one is for? I couldn't find a picture of one like it. The ones I saw when I searched have different letters in that spot. There's quite a few different variations. Love love love this stuff!

Yeap 1813 Spanish - nice!

The dime is a Barber series coin.

I’m jealous lol It’s neat being able to see things in person and actually hold it!

I'm pretty sure it's an 1818 colonial Mexico 1 real from the Zacatecas mint. Ferdinand VII

Thanks for the info! I was curious b/c some said Guatemala, Peru, and Mexico. Now I can relay some info back to him!

I'm with Cudamark.
The coin was issued during Mexico's War of Independence years (1810 to 1821). This particular 1R coin series ran from 1813 through 1820. "AG" was the assayer's initials seen throughout this series.

Wow! Y'all are awesome! Thank you so much! I think he'll be tickled to actually know some background on it.

Wow, buy him some beers and get him to confess the location he is detecting haha. Awesome finds, congrats to your friend.

1813 and some of 1814 the assay initials were FP. AG in that series ran from 1814 to part of 1820. That's why I don't think it's an 1813.

What other year could it say?

Haha! What’s crazy, he didn’t even dig these! He’s found all of his coins just getting change back and walking fields hunting marbles!

Nice handful of old coins! :icon_thumleft:

Actually, both assayers, FP and AG were on these 1Rs in both 1813 and 1814.

What a nice collection he has! I have read about the coins having holes in them for keeping on string historically, but I don't think that would apply considering the age of the dime you have there. Maybe it was someone's good luck charm :) Thanks for sharing the pics!

On the 1814, I would agree. I haven't seen or heard of an 1813 1R with AG assayer marks (though I really haven't looked all that hard :laughing7:). In the 1/2R (although there is some disagreement there) and 8R both are used, but, not in the 1R according to the Standard Catalog of World Coins by Krause and Mishler 1981, and North American Coins and prices edited by David Harper, which is also a Krause publication 1998. I hope it is an 1813AG, that might be worth a lot of money! I'd get that puppy under a good microscope! :icon_thumright:

Thanks! I’ll have to tell him to bring it somewhere to get it looked at. I’m sure I’ll see him tomorrow.
