Don't know Shaun, iv'e got a few with nice portraits but the majority are very weakly stuck.
I don't know either but most of the portraits are weak. Its just the norm, but probably is a good reason

They used two dies Shaun one with the portrait on,and one with the reverse ,lay-ed a round disc of Silver in beetween and struck them with a hammer hence hammered coins
