My good friend Joe and I hit a colonial shipping dock for about 4 hours today until the lightning ran us out. Found 7 colonial buttons (2 pewter), a buckle, arrowheads and more. We found a conglomeration of a chain and other items but not sure what it is or it's function. I broke it apart and put a picture below. Any ideas??

great finds on the points!, the buttons are awesome as well, I have no idea what the item with the chain is though

great hunt!

Great group of finds there! Odd because I just cleaned a similar shaped chain today for a buddy. He dropped a bunch of CW iron off for me to do electrolysis on and I found the chain in my CW book identified as a "trace chain" for a wagon. Perhaps yours is used for something similar.

Edit: I just saw your chain on top of the cooler and its way more heavy duty than the one I cleaned today in my picture. So, while shaped similar, yours is much larger.

I know on the chain the part in the middle is used to tie a ship or log raft to a wharf or dock so I think if you research along that kind of idea you will find it use.

I would have said horse related, maybe a wagon or for a heavy plough.

Thanks for the input. It is very similar just heavier.
