Colonial Period? And how was it attached to the handle?

Hey All,

Cant seem to find a match for this hand tool. Im assuming its an adze, but has a strange design where the handle would have attached.Maybe a good bit of material is gone? Someone must of found one similiar, rite?

Looks like an adze to me and the handle hole looks like it cleaved off.

Wrought iron has a fiber like grain.
Quality steel was often reserved for the cutting edge itself . Often the iron was folded over it and forge welded. Fluxed after heating it just right and a certain"pop!" when it welds right with a hammer blow.

Iron on the poll end ,or iron worked anywhere else was subject to weakness or impurities...From a variety of causes.

What can be real hard on iron ,(or even steel) is sub zero weather ,or sudden temp changes.
Not warming a tool before use in the right/wrong conditions could cause (and has caused) breaks.

Hammering on a poll with too hard a mallet (or more often an improper other tool used to strike with) can and has messed up tools too.
