I recently found this iron relic sifting a colonial site. It originally (apparently) was connected across the top with a thin arched part; the overall shape resembles a stirrup but of it's way too small to be one. Any ideas?

If it was indeed connected/complete as you say, I would agree with VMI with it being a small buckle. If instead the ends are just slightly bent inward, then it could be a small staple. Used for a variety of construction and utility uses. Possibly in conjunction with a leather item.

Thanks Tom and AARC. Following your lead I think I have figured this thing out-it appears to be a staple used in a door latch assembly:

"The accompanying original bar set, pictured center below, has a 6" bar with a 1 1/2" high drive-in staple and a drive-in jamb keeper."

And another one from the same web site
