If I'm not mistaken minting of the Colombian Exposition Commemorative Halves (and the other Commemorative in that series) was to help fund the Exposition which was held in Chicago in the 1890's. The hall (Machinery Hall) was a part of that Exposition, which was also called the Chicago World's Fair.
The Dream City: Machinery Hall
The image you provide is tough to make out. It could be that rather than the Commemorative Half you have a token that has the same minted image of Columbus. The Commemorative Half does not have the words Machinery Hall on it.
