"COMMISSIONER'S HILL IRONBARK 1853"

The year was 1853,newly appointed gold commissioner was Mr A Panton. He's job was collect the gold licence fees which where one pound and ten shillings, a considerable amount of money in the 1850's.The miners paid but there was plenty of ill feeling which later led to rebellion. The gold commissioner was in total control and had the help of the British 40th regiment.[about 400 soldiers and gold police]On the first day of each month every miner had go to the hill to pay their licence fees. There was considerable amount of activity on this hill until 1856 when the commissioner's home and court was built up the road, about 300 yards away.

Tonight i went to where the camp once was and all the grass is every dead and spent about 4 hours there and i think this site has been hunted before and there was little to be found.i tried my luck and found broken english black bottle and couple of really thick pottery shards[9 mm thick].I did get one small copper and at first thought to be a Australia one cent [first issue] 1966 but when i cleaned up first using a stiff nylon brush and water i noticed that was a coin i had not ever seen before.I then used a cotton lemisher wheel on a 4 inch grinder.Sort made the middle and edges bit over done.Bad idea but at least i could see what the coin was .The coin is a common English half-farthing but all same got a great date as far as i,m concerned as i only have ever found 4 coins that pre-date 1850.That as far back as i,m ever going to find here as there was very few people here before 1840.

tinpan got a pic of print of the site in 1853
