My Compadre arrived today (thanks 4-H for another excellent transaction!). A few minutes to assemble. Turn it on and you get a 3-4 second loud blast of sound to indicate battery power.

Recommendation: put your earphones on AFTER you turn the Compadre on. :o

That 5.75" coil sure is small. Don't know how well it'll perform for me at the beach, but we'll find out. It ought to be excellent in those parks, though!

Set the Discrimination knob to "IRON" and here's the air test results (not exactly scientific) indicating the maximum depth before a solid signal, however weak, was achieved:

Small pieces of iron: no sound (well, the discrimination works)

Nail: 3.5" and got a double blip

Rusty Nail: 4" and a very broken, crackling chirp

Tiny Aluminum: 3.5"

Pulltab: 4.5" - 5"

Bottle Cap: 5.5"

Button: 5"

Small Costume Ring: 5"

Costume Earring: 5"

Hoop Bracelet: 4.5"

Tokens: 4.5" - 5"

Now for the worthwhile stuff. The first number is the depth with discrimination set at IRON, the second number in () is the depth in ALL METAL mode:

Steel Ring, heavy: 5" (6")

Platinum Ring, heavy: 4" (6")

Gold Ring, heavy: 5.5" (6.5")

Clad Penny: 4.5" - 5" (no change)

Clad Nickel: 5" (6")

Clad Dime: 5" (no change) :dontknow:

Clad Quarter: 5.5" (no change) :dontknow:

Silver Half: 5" (5.5")

Dollar Coin: 5" (5.5")

Well, there's the unscientific test. Some noticeable depth is gained cutting back from the IRON (of course now you're digging everything), and I don't want to set it at more than that because I don't want to cut out small jewelry.

I'll let you all know how the hunt goes this weekend!

Hi Smudge, The Compadre is a real "sleeper" and there is a heap to be learned about taking advantage of it's abilities. Snoop around on some of the forums and check up on the tricks and tips from some of the real fired up Compadre hands. There are several of them over on Find's Tesoro Forum and there are almost always some real good tips being put out there on the Compadre. Go see where the best setting on the knob is for those tiny/fine gold chains you may be hoping for at the beach.
