Comparisons: White's MXT, new PI II

I read in Lost Treasure Mag. that pulse induction models are used mainly for beach and under water hunting.
Here's thier web site and look under field test on the left hand side of the screen.

Thanks, S Hardy. I have seen that site several times... I was interested in a more direct 'side-by-side' comparison, where they take several known targets and bury them at known depths, and run different detectors over them to find out which does what.

As it is, I think the MXT is the more versatile machine, in that it can discriminate and can be 'tweaked' in a number of ways to match the hunting conditions, whereas the PI is limited in that all you can do is dig everything. I ran a test this morning with an MXT on a black-sandy salt-water beach and found an 18k 2mm thin gold chain at 4" (planted), which seems to be pretty impressive. I can't find another machine that will pick up this chain, though I haven't tried the PI yet under real hunting conditions. Air testing the PI suggests it won't do as well.

I'm interested in finding in formation on whether the new White's PI II can do as well or better than the MXT. I understand the PI (pulse induction) doesn't discriminate well, but maybe the PI II does? Anyone have experience with the newer PI II?

What's the PI II? Haven't heard of this one...

My mistake-- its actually called the White's Surfmaster PI Pro. It is the newest version of White's PI detector, and I've heard it will pick up thin gold chains.

The problem, of course, with very small gold on the beach is that it is in competition with every microscopic piece of foil out there, and there's a LOT of foil out there! So what I'm looking for is a detector that can find the gold without so much foil-- a difficult if not impossible task.

The fellow I've been talking to (local club member and distributor) claims to have found earrings with nice emeralds and diamonds that were larger than the tiny gold frame supports his detector picked up.

Hey Lab Rat,
Once again I take up the cause. I included a pic of some of the pieces I've found with my 1235X, most which would be passed by using one of my CZ's unless they were in all metal. I've checked these with my Uncles 1236X2 and they make a nice clear sound.

Most of these were an inch or more under sand. The chain was three or more inches under woodchips. So it's either turn that sense up and disc down or miss 'em!

Yup, I have a SMPI-pro. It's one of the more sensitive PI detectors. It's basically the same as the SMPI, with the mods that Bill Crabtree had been doing to boost sensitivity. I find that the threshold is a bit erratic, which may be due to the high gain, and it falses with moving surf, which may be due to a very short pulse delay. None of the current PI detectors discriminate, so you basically dig everything.

Thanks, folks! That helps a lot, even though it will probably complicate my decision for a new detector. Maybe I'll get several... :)
