Got out for about four hours yesterday in the woods, new area for me. Very little targets, managed to find an ox shoe, five shotgun shell butts, square nail, pulltab, and this really awesome shoe buckle. In the past I've only found the frames and other parts of this type. Amazing how this one buckle is exciting to me.

As to preserving it I didn't rinse it with water or anything because I'm afraid it might fall apart, I've heard about cleaning it with some petroleum jelly to help preserve it, any truth to that?

I believe it's colonial period, any info would be appreciated, thanks for looking and happy hunting!!

That baby looks solid as a rock. No water! If anything just a dry brush. I've never heard of the petroleum jelly. I'd wait on that until I was positive. I honestly would not do anything at all to that show buckle. I have several in my collection that look quite similar. It's a great find and should date mid to late 1700s....without looking at my books

What a beautiful loop chape and wavy border. Your excitement is totally understandable. WTG!

Thanks Ahab, I will leave it alone, I had a feeling it would be the best way to go. Thank you so much.

I pulled these from other TN threads...

Vpnavy, thank you very much for taking the time out and putting all that together for me. Much appreciated!

Very nice and complete buckle DD. Some people try to exercise the hinges, but I don't. I worry about the pin breaking. Strangely, some pins on complete brass buckles are iron. Probably for strength. Congrats

That's a really nice buckle, congrats on getting such a nice keeper for the hunt.

Congratualtions on the beautiful buckle! :occasion14:

I'll take your advice I'm not going to try to exercise the hinge, I believe the pin is iron in this one. Thanks for reply!

Dude, Beautiful Buckle. Nice that we both got bucket listers yesterday. I was told that a light coat of petroleum jelly will stop oxidation, especially when the buckle contains ferrous and non ferrous metals.
I too would go with Ahab8's suggestions.
Congrats on a Sweet Find.

Nice find indeed!

WOW FACTOR 10 !!! That's a real nice piece of history you have there. Excellent recovery not damaging that beauty. As other's have stated leave it be until you receive the best method of restoration which might be just leave it be. I have tinkered with some cool finds only to break things trying to restore them.:BangHead: This is too way cool for any chances to be taken. Congrats on a real beauty.

Thanks for your reply. I will heed your advice. I was happy I did not hit it with the digger, trying to be a little more careful after a month ago I whacked the reverse side of the seated dime. HH
