Conductivity of iron in dry ground

So I went back to a CW site I've been working for about 6 weeks now over the weekend. In general the ground has been pretty good there because we've had a decent amount of rain this summer, and I've never had much of a problem notching out iron at this site. On Saturday though, I went on the same basic path I've been hunting and I got almost nothing BUT rusty iron, even having everything up to and including pull tabs notched out. I ground balanced 4 or 5 times thoughout the morning thinking it may be related. The only difference I could think of was that it hasn't rained in what seems like forever here now and the ground is so dry it's hard to keep a plug intact anymore.

I know damp ground will give better conductivity, but is what I experienced Saturday kind of typical of very dry soil?
