Paid about $30 dollars yesterday for an 1858 confederate dollar from the bank of south carolina. It has handwritten signatures. I cannot make out the first one, but the second one looks like c j shannon. The serial number is handwritten and is #19. It is in very good shape. Any ideas?
(PS, not able to post pics because of my reasons.)

you mean a real bank? how did they happen to have it?

No, I got it at an antique store in virginia. The guy had a whole bunch of different coins including a Booker T Washington commemorative silver half dollar for $24. It just happened to be a country store we stopped at on the way to verona, where the largest antique store on the east coast is located.

I know a few bills from the confederacy from the civil war are very common. If it's from before the civil war, does it make it rarer and possibly more valuable?

I found the name c j shannon. It looks like he worked for the town of camden, south carolina. I found it in manuscripts from 1838 to 1864.
